And the Season Begins...

The dungeness crab season opened today. For the first time, Kevin is captain of a crab boat instead of just working as a deckhand (he, of course, is captain of his own boat in the summer when he fishes for salmon and tuna). This boat is a pretty small crab boat, so he won't make much more money than years past, but his job as captain is much more cushy than the job of a deckhand. :o) Kevin left at midnight (yes, 12am is when it officially opens), and when I talked to him around 7:30am when I got up, he had about 1600 crab out of 100 pots fished with 200 more pots to go. So far, so good. Unfortunately the ocean forecast is rough for this next week, which stinks but is common this time of the year. I guess the good thing is that it will allow the kids a more gradual adjustment to having their Daddy being gone a lot again.

Too bad we live so far apart...we could both use the company in the evenings this time of year!

Do you ever cook crab? Just curious. I've never prepared it and only eaten it after someone else has gone to all the work. Delicious though! And hard work for your man. Glad he gets to take things a little cushier -- he deserves it.
