Snow Day

When the snowfall finally let up this evening, we ended up with six inches of snow today! That's a lot for around these parts. And the extra exciting part was that it stayed below freezing so the snow didn't melt! Almost all of my memories of snow days consist of getting out there early in the morning before the snow melts. The snow would get wetter and wetter as the day wore on and soak into your clothes if you dared to keep playing in it. I always hated how the roads got slushy, dirty and ugly almost right away. And you always had to beware of falling chunks of snow and drops of water when you walked beneath the tree branches. Not so this time. Nope, the snow stuck, stayed, and was beautiful all day long! Even now the road in front of my house is still beautiful and white and the trees continue to show off their white-dusted branches.

We took a few snow pictures today, hoping to get some good ones for our Christmas card/letter (yeah, I know, it's a little late to be just beginning to think about sending them out...=). Since it kept snowing for hours and wouldn't let up, it was hard to find a spot that was sheltered enough to take a picture. After taking a few from our back porch, we ended up over at the park, nestled among some trees. Here's some of the pictures we took:

I didn't get Kevin to make Abby a snowman today, but we did enjoy a nice walk around the neighborhood as a family in the early evening. I love walking in the snow. I love the way the snow deadens sound to produce a quiet calmness. And the way the snow makes the world brighter, even at night. I like seeing the snowmen in people's yards and the evidence of sleds and footsteps on the side of the road telling of all the fun had that day. I love looking at the snow resting on the evergreen branches. I enjoy seeing how our Christmas lights seem to glow in the snow. I'm constantly amazed at the beauty of the snowflakes falling from the sky. And I love snuggling close together to stay warm.

The "river" was almost completely buried under the snow and the lights produced a beautiful twinkling glow from beneath!

Although Calvin did spend some time watching the snowflakes fall out the window, he spent most of the day curled up under his blanket on his perch in the study! Yes, he likes to be completely under the blanket at times (we say that he's in his "sleeping bag" when he climbs inside the blanket =). I loved how just his feet were sticking out when I walked into the room and snapped this picture.

As a side note to my readers in other areas (like my friends in the Northeast who are used to way more snow than we get), you may find it amusing that not only were schools cancelled today but even our main shopping mall closed its doors this afternoon! Yes, we pretty much all stay home around here when we get just a few inches of snow. =)

Wow, I don't think it's ever snowed so much that they closed the mall before! At least not when I've been old enough to know what the mall was. :) It looks so beautiful! I hope it lasts for me to see..just a couple days more!

Oooohh, I love that river of lights under the snow! Very cute family pictures, too. Don't feel bad, I think we'll be sending out a New Year's letter instead. :o) But, hey...that makes sense, right? "Happy new year, here's what happened in our world last year..." ?
