Overnight Improvement

When Ben was a baby, he had similar nursing issues to Jacob that required me to pump and feed him a bottle for 2 months. During that time I continued to give him nursing time even though he wasn't able to get anything. That last week or two, he just slowly started to eat less out of a bottle and got more straight from me. So, that is how I expected it to go with Jacob. Of course, for my sanity, I hoped the changeover would happen sooner, but I still thought it would happen gradually. It just makes sense.

But a few days ago, Jakey woke up and for whatever reason figured out how to nurse! That day he took only two partial bottles and none the following days! Good-bye bottles and pumping! He literally went from getting 0.5 ounces in an hour to 2.5 ounces in 10 minutes overnight! (We have a postal scale that we can weigh him on to see exactly how much he is getting. :) He's not a perfect nurser yet (for instance, he likes to eat smaller amounts more frequently), but I'd say he improved about 80% in just one day!

Yay, no more washing and cluttering up my counter top! :)

And speaking of 80% in one day... For the past couple days Ben's rash was slightly improved. We noticed certain areas were healing, but other areas would get more rashy and he still had a fever last night when he went to bed. Well, this morning he woke up with no fever and almost all the redness is gone! Yay! He is still somewhat fussy and occasionally mentions that it itches still, but I'm sure he will be back to 100% very soon. Now we just hope Abby doesn't get a full-blown version, as she has a fever and a small rash on her wrist....

Well, using our own postal scale sure beats going to the lactation consultant or the pediatrician (did both with Ben!) to nurse, weighing before and after, to see how much he got! :)

I wouldn't have if there hadn't been a concern that my children were starving and dehydrated! From what I remember you're kiddos have been pretty good nursers. :)

Amazing perspective you have after the last week. I'm so glad you are on the other side of the huge obstacles! A postal scale is a great idea because that is exactly what they do at the LC. Plus, you have to feed your baby with other people around and THEN weigh your baby.

I had the opposite problem with Briar, she wouldn't take a bottle-no matter what, no matter what kind. I gave up, now she just comes with me everywhere.

"pretty good" I suppose :) It takes a little bit of time to get everyone adjusted but I just let them figure it out...I havent ever thought they were starving--no :) LOL
