It has occurred to me that I never blogged about a very, very important event: Abby's first word. Back in mid-July Abby began babbling, "Ma-ma, ma-ma, ma-ma." Not wanting to make an assumption or take credit where it wasn't due, I wanted to make sure it wasn't just baby talk and that Abby really was referring to me. My husband, mom, sister, and nephew were all convinced before I was that those were truly Abby's first words. After many days of this, I finally agreed when Abby began reaching for me and looking toward me when she said, "Mama." It is so precious to hear her say it and I feel so privileged that Abby chose me to the object of her first words. =) I never tire of her saying "Mama" (and "Mum" sometimes) - well except for the couple of occasions when she's said my name angrily when she was upset. =) About ten days after she began saying "Ma-ma," she also added "Da-da" to her small vocabulary (Kevin says she's actually said "Daddy" a few times, but I haven't heard it yet... ;o). But mostly she just says "ma-ma" for everything (including Daddy oftentimes, much to his chagrin =). I think it's so cute. Since she knows how to say only a couple words and yet obviously wants to talk, she calls the cat, a book, a girl at church, or just about anything and anyone "ma-ma."
(Remember how I was so excited that Abby used the sign for "milk" when she wanted to nurse? Well, the same pattern has developed: now that she has the sign down, she uses it for everything. Off and on, all day long, Abby signs "milk" - and almost never at the correct time. Oh well, it's pretty cute to watch her hands make the movements and to see her so proud of herself for doing it.)
Anyway, I guess I never blogged about Abby saying "Mama" because after I waited so long to make sure she actually knew what she was saying, it had become the norm around our house and was no longer big news. Obviously, "Mama" and "Dada" are often baby's first words so it was not too much of a surprise, but I am quite curious as to what Abby's next few words will be. Maybe "Kitty"? ;o)
