Thrifty Thursdays | Savings, Hot Deal and Coupons

Quick Shopping Trip to Safeway: 64% Savings

Two weeks ago, I encouraged you to at least try to use some of the tools out there to add some coupon match-ups to your weekly grocery shopping. I decided to do this myself at Safeway a few days later. I scoured the Safeway ad which had with some pretty great sales (Fresh Express Spinach for $.98, 2 lbs Blueberries for $3.88), was filled with Super Coupons of which I clipped several (like $1.50 off coupon for Sargento Provolone cheese on sale for $2.99 which made it only $1.49), and had a promotional going on for certain kinds of cereal (an instant $5 off if you buy 5 participating cereals). I also checked out several bloggers that listed Safeway deals to see if there were additional manufacturer coupons on the internet to match up and there were. Then I got my list and coupons together and went shopping!

I ended up only paying $23.98 for the 20 items pictured above. The regular price would have been $66.63, so I saved 64%! Not too shabby for simple ad-searching and coupon-matching. The only thing I purchased that was not on sale was the bananas and I had coupons (either Safeway, manufacturer or both) for everything else except two or three items. And these aren't all normally cheap items -for instance, the olive oil was regularly $8.39 but with a sale and two coupons I was able to buy it for $3.99. But I was most pleased the the cereal deal. I got 4 boxes of Kashi cereal (these used to be too spendy for me to buy!) and 1 box of Kellogg's Cornflakes for $4 total. Here's to yummy, healthier and cheaper eating! =)

There's a similar Kashi food deal going on at Albertson's this week (9/9 - 9/15). Check out page 4 of their ad. If you buy 4 participating Kashi items, you'll save $4 instantly at check-out. Pair each of the 4 items with a coupon from the Krazy Coupon Lady's coupon database (scroll down to the "K" section where you'll find 5 different Kashi coupons). Depending on what coupons and items you pick, you should be able to get each item from somewhere around $.50 to $1.00. (By the way, next to some of the links in the coupon database "IE" stands for Internet Explorer and "FF" stands for Firefox. Also, in order to get two of each coupon be sure to click back on your browser after printing the first one - sometimes you must click back a couple times to get it to work).

Deal of the Week

Restaurant.com offers gift certificates to restaurants for a fraction of the face value. Go to their site and enter in your zip code to find local, participating restaurants. You'll notice some restaurants have 50% off gift certificates and other such deals, but most have $25 gift certificates available for purchase for $10. The only catch is that most of them require that your total purchase be $35 or more, so essentially this works more like a really good coupon. Often Restaurant.com runs specials of 50% off, or even 80% off, but for only 99 hours they are offering the gift certificates at 90% off in honor of yesterday's date, 09/09/09!! This means you can purchase a $25 gift certificate for only $1!! Amazing deal! Use this code at checkout and hit apply: NINETY . This offer is only available until September 13, 2009 at 3am PST. (Thanks, ThriftyNWMom!)

Hot Internet Coupons

Something healthy: Rozoni Healthy Harvest and Smart Taste Pasta
I've tried several whole grain pastas before and didn't care for the taste. I used this coupon paired with a doubler coupon at Albertson's the other week for the Rozoni Healthy Harvest Pasta, and, surprise, I liked it! I'm pleased to have found a healthier pasta that I can actually enjoy too. =) Go here to print your $1/2 coupon.

Something not so healthy: Keebler Fudge Shoppe Cookies
Over the last several years, I've slowly been trying to eat and cook more healthfully (much to my husband's dismay!). But some things don't change - I still love Keebler Cookies, especially the Grasshopper variety! Use this hot $1/1 coupon with a sale (or maybe an Albertson's doubler coupon if more come out in this Sunday's paper??) to score an awesome deal on some yummy cookies!

Nice deal you got! I haven't found many of the Kashi cereals that I like...they taste pretty healthy if you know what I mean, and usually are really pricey, as you said. I tried the restaurant.com trick for my area but they only had one deal for an oyster bar that isn't very good in my opinion...bummer. Hope you found some better deals!

Bummer! There's a bunch of restaurants listed for the Olympia/Tacoma area. None of big chains of course, but several I've heard very good reviews about.

And as for the Kashi cereals, so far I've tried three of the ones I bought. I don't like the original GOLEAN at all. Yuck. But I did like the original GOLEAN Crunch - it didn't taste overly healthy, but it's way too crunchy for Abby to eat. I've also been enjoying the Black Currants and Walnuts one. Yum.

love the product reviews! and, it's cool that you're taking the whole eating healthier via couponing approach, too (says the one who has a nice little stash of cinnamon toast crunch...lol). which restaurants have you heard good reviews about? i'm trying to decide which ones to buy certificates for...waterstreet cafe sounded pretty good...thanks again for posting your deals!

Thanks, Andrea. I have a stockpile of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Frosted Flakes, etc as well, but mostly for Kevin - he would NEVER eat Kashi cereal! =) I've heard from a few friends over the years that the Urban Onion is great, and I've also heard some good things about Gardner's Seafood and Pasta and the Dockside Bistro. I don't know anyone personally that's been to the Waterstreet Cafe, but it sure looks neat! Let me know how it is if you end up going there!
