Naming a Baby

Naming a baby is hard! I guess that some people have names picked out for years and find the task simple, but for Kevin and me it is very difficult! Many people have asked us what we are going to call our son...and with only two weeks left until his due date, you'd think we'd have an answer. But we don't! It's such a big decision that we want our child and us to always be happy with.

Shortly before Abby was born, we'd narrowed our picks for a boy name down to Timothy Isaac Marks (initials TIM =). Currently, I guess that is what our son will be called unless we can come up with something better. The problem is that I'm not completely sold on the name - it doesn't jump out at me, if you will. But I can't think of anything better. Both Kevin and I like more traditional names and especially Biblical names. I also like the idea of using family names for middle names.

Since neither of us are completely sold on Timothy Isaac, a couple weeks ago we visited the Social Security Administration's popular baby names website (it's pretty fun, go waste some time seeing where your own names stands! =) and went through the top 100 or so boy names and wrote down any names that weren't rejected by one of us. Here's what we came up with, in no particular order:

Jacob
Joshua
Daniel
Christopher
Matthew
Andrew
Joesph
Benjamin
Caleb
Isaac
Zachary
Luke
Thomas
Timothy
Jeremy
Joel
Levi
Lincoln

That's nearly twenty names! Yikes! Poor little Abby didn't have a name until about 3am the second night she was in the hospital. Like I said, we're pretty indecisive about the whole naming thing. I'm hoping we'll settle on one before the baby arrives this time. Hopefully.

PS) Kevin has his own list of names that he's always wanted to name his son, but I won't allow it. ;o) You can vote on those names in the poll on the left.

How about Malachi Matthew Marks? Just kidding. I have always been a huge fan of Samuel David, however. And I also like Timothy Isaac Marks, by the way.

You've got some good names there. On your list are a couple we are considering if we have a boy. The one who has the baby first wins...

PS Jeff and I both think Kevin's boy name choices are hilarious. We vote for Skid.

I think Levi Issac goes well with Abby and your last name...I have always loved the name Luke, too. (of course that doesnt really work with Issac...) Benjamin Issac is nice too. I think the nickname Ben has always sounded nice and strong. anyway, off your list those are my two cents :) Good luck! And I went with out a name for 3 days....so no worries, I turned out alright! ;)

I do like Timothy Isaac, but Levi has been one of my favorites for years. I just really like it! Also, it isn't quite as common as some of the others, which is nice in a classroom and Sunday school. Daniel is VERY common, which you notice when your husband is named Daniel!

When I was trying to guess what you would name him, I always thought Jacob. And I see that that is on your list!
That SSA website is fun. Our rule for naming was that it COULDN'T be in the top 100! lol. But we like different names.
Good luck. The perfect one will jump out at you. I felt hopeless about it at times too.

I love Kevin's ideas for names and yet I commend you for refusing them. ;) I voted for Skid...gross!
As far as the 'real' names...you have lots of good ones there. I agree with Coleson's Blog that Ben is a good strong name. At first I thought Lincoln was really weird, but I'm warming up to it now, maybe his nickname would be Lin.
I don't envy you...good luck! I don't think you can go wrong anyway.

Plus if you go with Levi you and Matthew McConaughey will now have something to talk about next time you hang out.

My cousin on my side has a son named Levi and I agree sounds good with your last name. (Also like it 'cuz it is used many times in the Beaverly Lewis books) Isaac is John's middle name, we were going to use it but decided that having one son with "daddy's name" might create some jealousy. (4 boys fighting over Dad's attention and approval is going to be hard by itself) I would suggest not confusing Grandma V with more than one great-grandson with the same name :) (we have 3 in our little family on your list)

I like Luke, Zachary (Zach), Joel and Benjamin (Ben). Luke would have been my little guys name, but my sister-in-law got it first! All the names on your list are great, strong names. I'm sure you'll come up with a great name for Abby's brother!
