The Zoo

The original plan was to go to the zoo last Friday, but we had to change our plans. Kevin's Grandma had to unexpectedly have surgery to remove a tumor in her colon, so we headed out to the Aberdeen hospital to visit with her before her surgery. Unfortunately, she had already been moved into intensive care where children are not allowed, so Abby and I had to stay in the hallway for a couple hours while Kevin visited with his Grandma. Thankfully, I'd brought several toys and snacks along and Abby did wonderfully, playing with "bubba" and smiling at all the doctors and nurses that passed by. She also got to visit with Kevin's parents a little bit too.

So, on Saturday we headed to the zoo, which ended up working out better anyway - it was warm and sunny, and Ted was able to go with us too since he was up for the weekend again.

We started off with the marine talk at the beluga whale exhibit. Abby was intrigued by the whale (it was so cute to hear her say, "whale, whale!"), but soon grew bored by all the talking and was more interested in her reflection on the glass window in front of her. =)

Her favorite exhibit by far was the aquarium. She loved watching all the fish swim around.

Abby watching a shark swim by.

The favorite exhibit of Ted, Hannah and me was the small-clawed Asian otters, pictured below to the right of Abby. They were wide awake and clamoring all over each other - it was so adorable! Ironically, Abby was more interested in the glass window again and had more fun banging against it than looking at the otters. =)

Abby and a monkey checking each other out.

The zoo now has a large play area for kids that wasn't there when I was growing up. All three of the cousins had a blast playing. Abby's favorite part was this crocodile she kept climbing on....and called "kitty" several times - don't ask me!

I tried to get one last group picture of the kids before we left and I took three pictures - in each one a different kid wasn't looking. They started getting annoyed with me. I gave up. Kids are hard to photograph. =)

We went to the zoo on Monday and it was complete craziness. I've never seen so many strollers in all my life. I've heard your zoo is WAY cooler and bigger than Portland. Your pictures don't show hoards of people, so it must be true.

Looks like fun. Glad you got to get out with family and enjoy the animals and the sunshine.

PS Mandy's favorite was the sea lions.
