Abby Talk Again

I overheard Abby talking to herself, "I'm a pretty girl 'cause I got two skirts. I'm a happy girl 'cause I wear two skirts."

Using an "adult-talking-to-baby" type voice, Abby said to her brother, "Ben, you are such a BIG boy. Yes, you are! You are SO big!"

A conversation between Abby and my mom during lunch...
Abby: "Grandma, do you like blue?"
Grandma: "Yes, I like blue."
Abby: "I like pink!"
Grandma: "I like pink, too."
Abby: "I will share pink with you!"

While trying to encourage Abby to be excited about wearing underpants, I said, "You are such a BIG girl now!" Abby replied, "No, I'm actually a little girl. I still need to grow up more." She is very realistic just like her mommy.

As Abby was playing with Ben on the floor, I overheard her say to him, "Ben, you're a princess." Now, I'm okay with grabbing one of Abby's old, pink blankets or bibs and using them with Ben on occasion, and I'm also okay with Abby sharing her dolls with Ben...but this is where it crosses the line. =) I interrupted her conversation, "Actually, Ben is not a princess; he is a prince." Abby then said to Ben, "When you grow up, you will be a princess." Hm, not quite what I meant. Again, I was forced to interfere, "No, Abby. Girls are princesses and boys are princes. You are a princess; Ben is a prince. And Ben will always be a prince even when he grows up." There, hopefully that covered all the bases! I'm not sure if she was satisfied with that, but for the moment the princess/prince topic was over. =)

As I was tucking Abby into bed, I asked for my hug and kiss. She wrapped her arms around my neck and gave me a big smooch on the cheek. When I sighed contentedly, she said to me, "I'm making you happy."

Abby is into using adverbs and uses these words ALL the time: actually, really, very, still, already. As she is still trying to figure them out, she sometimes uses them even when not necessary, such as when asked (for the first time) if she wants more grapes... "I still want more grapes."

While at the Christian bookstore, we noticed that the TV set up for kids that usually plays a Veggie Tales movie wasn't on. Upon asking, we were told that it was broken. Abby quickly said, "Daddy needs to fix it." The sales clerk smiled.

One night I couldn't get to sleep because of Kevin's snoring and had a rare moment of compassion and decided to go sleep in Abby's room on the guest bed (usually I just elbow him until he rolls over =). When I tip-toed into Abby's room, she was still awake and so I explained to her, "Daddy is snoring too loud, so I'm going to sleep in here with you. Is that okay?" "Yeah," she replied, "but just be quiet." I almost broke her rule right then by laughing out loud! =)

We have a small plaque at the end of our hallway that I bought in Israel that says Shalom in Hebrew. Soon after Abby learned to talk we taught her what the sign says and she occasionally points to it and "reads" it aloud as she walks by. A few days ago, Abby came running down the hallway, happily shrieking at the top of her lungs the whole way. Just as she turned to corner into the study where Kevin and I were, she stopped shrieking and calmly said, "Shalom." We busted up laughing at the irony.

Abby was sitting next to Kevin on the floor and asked him with all seriousness, "Daddy, are you poopy?" "No," he laughed, "Daddy just let a stinky toot." She giggled.

You're good at keeping track of some fun conversations. I am not so good at taking the every day life and writing it down. I wish I could just set a video camera up in the corner!! These first years are such a precious time and I know I wont remember them as well as I'd like...
