October Activities

Below, Abby is helping Jake with his Bible verse memorization for AWANA Cubbies. It is Jake's first year in AWANA and he is loving it and so glad to finally be able to join his big brother and sister!

He also loves to entertain his little sister and make her laugh and smile.

Just like the other kids, Lizzy loves the mobile we put over the changing table....but with a twist. Kevin noticed when she was several weeks old that she kept looking toward the wall at the shadows the mobile animals made on the wall more often than directly looking at them. Knowing that babies like high contrast and bright colors, we looked around quickly and grabbed a drawing Abby had made for Ben a couple years ago that was still hanging on our "art wall." Lizzy LOVED it and so there it stays! And it made Abby so pleased! :)

The shed in the backyard that is to be Kevin's new office/study is 99% complete and so the moving in process has begun. My always-crazy-busy husband only has a few minutes here and there to work on it when he comes home, but the bookcase is now all filled in. The kids had lots of fun helping. I'll post more pictures when the moving process is closer to done...whenever that happens! :oP

Calvin took the new baby in stride - he's got this down now. :) But one thing that is different is that I basically kicked him out of my bedroom for the first time ever. He ended up getting a bad case of fleas shortly after Lizzy was born and in addition to other things (like waking up the baby with his meowing), I shooed him away and hollered at him enough times that he will no longer come into our bedroom where the baby sleeps in a small crib next to our bed. Once Kevin completes the move of his office, that room will become Abby and Lizzy's and then I will invite Calvin back. :) In the meantime, the kids enjoy getting to see and play with Calvin more as he hangs out on the couch and his perch all the time now.

This picture was taken right about when Lizzy was two months old. Such a sweetheart!

Over the summer, we worked with Abby a little bit on riding her bike without training wheels, but she couldn't quite get the hang of it. During the weeks following Lizzy's birth, we had some help from people at our church - mostly with meals. A teen volunteered to mow the lawn one time for me when Kevin was gone for an extended fishing trip. Connor has always been so kind and a great help with the kids when I am by myself at church too. Anyway, the dew never dried up, so instead of mowing the lawn, Connor took the older kids over to the park for me...and while there, he taught Abby to ride her bike! She is a pro now and several times has gone with me on a job - so much fun to have her riding along with me!

I bet Ben is pretty much ready too, but we'll wait until spring to teach him to ride without training wheels (and maybe we'll have to invite Connor over again!!). For now, he is speedy-Gonzalez on his trike or John Deere tractor.

Jake prefers to sit back with one of his many junk mail fishing magazines. :)

My mom came with us one day to a pumpkin patch. Well, we didn't even go to the actual patch, but we had soooo much fun doing all the activities! It was a challenge with Lizzy and all her feeding difficulties, but we managed and it was made easier when we came upon a delightful surprise - a sweetly decorated nursing room in the barn! The Schilter Family Farm is our favorite and even more-so now!

Nursing Room:

I did not want to go through the corn maze thinking we may get lost for awhile in there and not knowing what I would do about Lizzy waking up and wanting to eat, but Abby talked me into it and we made it through in good time.

We haven't started full-time homeschooling yet, but Abby does her math, language arts, reading and Bible study everyday...usually on the couch with the cat on her lap. :)

We didn't win any coloring contests this fall, but the kids sure did a nice job again!

We planted some little sugar pumpkins this year in our garden and we were delighted when we realized the six pumpkins that grew nicely represented our new family of six and we proudly displayed them on our front walkway.
