Boat, Beach and Bog

Last week, Kevin called to say that they were coming in for a quick repair and to get more bait and then they'd be right back out again. He needed a few supplies, so I packed up the kids and we headed out to Westport for the day, so we could say hi to him before he headed back out to sea. As is often the case in the fishing industry, plans changed and Kevin ended up coming back home for the night (long story involving a possible blown motor in the refrigeration system that would have put an end to the fishing season and a very stressed husband :). But we had a fabulous day anyway. Well, the kids and I did (poor Kev was too stressed out to enjoy our visit very much). Even despite the fact that I had to take all three kids to the public restroom by myself twice (you try holding a 17-pound baby who is screaming because it's past nursing time, while trying to zip up your pants and hollering at an inquisitive 2-year-old not to touch anything! :). And despite the fact that I stepped in seal poop and smelled like it the rest of the day (just a suggestion: if you see something that looks like wet, gray cement on a dock, stay far away!). AND despite the fact that after arriving in Westport we had to wait around for an hour until Kevin got back from selling the fish..with two very hungry kiddos since it was two hours past their normal lunchtime (since we were in a hurry that morning, I'd brought hot dogs to make on the boat galley, but obviously could not make them until the boat returned!).

Part One of our day: the Boat!
Our first siting of Kevin! (This is the picture I was taking when I accidentally stepped in the seal poop at the end of the dock - I hope you think it's worth it! :)

Captain Jake!
Part II: The Beach!

After hot dogs with Daddy on the boat, we left him to his stressing as he waited for the refrigeration repair guy to show up. It was such a gorgeous day (I'm sure the last one of the year) that we wanted to spend some time playing on the beach before we went to visit Kevin's parents. And, oh, did we play! It seriously was the very best time I've had at the beach. Just me and my kiddos. A light breeze, warm sunshine - it was perfect! And happy kids the whole time, even playing right through nap time!

Part III: The Bog!

After our lovely time at the beach, the kids and I headed 10 miles down the coast to Kevin's parents' house to visit and have dinner. Kevin's niece and nephew were there helping with the cranberry harvest and Abby jumped right into it, "helping" to drive the quad with cousin Rebekah.

Even though we tried to fit a lot into our day, it still turned out well. But I was very thankful when Kevin caught up with us in his car just a mile from home and could help get the very-tired and now cranky children to bed. Oh, and the potentially-ruined $30,000 refrigeration system was not ruined and only needed a semi-simple fix (but too late for Kevin to back out fishing that night since he hadn't gotten bait yet)! Yay, for happy days that end well! :o)

Two kids and a baby in a honey bucket?! Oh, wow! You go, Momma! (Don't you think we should get awards or something for stuff like this? ;)

Ya that going to the bathroom thing while holding a baby is never fun, but when ya gotta go...!

Wow, sounds like it was a hard-won good time. I'm impressed you managed to stay positive through all of those potential mood killers. In the end, sounds like a lovey day. Great pictures-the boat one was worth it for me, but then I wasn't the one standing in poo! ;o)
