Night Photography Assignment

Before I post the pictures I took at my uncle and aunt's farm, I thought I should post a few pictures from my night photography assignment that I did several weeks ago. This was by far the hardest assignment of my photography class thus far. I had not done any night photography before. And while it was fun to experiment with long exposures and using a tripod, it was amazingly difficult for me to find good compositions. For whatever reason, the darkness of night just made me feel at a loss of how and of what to take pictures. Thankfully, most of my classmates voiced similar feelings about the assignment when we had to present our pictures to the rest of the class so that made me feel better. :)

Night photography also added the complication of childcare and odd hours. Unlike my other assignments, this was definitely not one my children could go on with me. And since it does not get dark until 9:30ish right now, it made for two separate very late nights for my mom who graciously stayed at my home while my children slept and for me who was out about town taking the pictures (and my dad one night and my husband the other night who went along with me to keep me safe :). When each picture takes an average of 30-seconds to take, you can imagine how quickly two hours can easily pass. I would have loved to have spent more time on this assignment, going to more locations and not feeling so rushed to get home. But you work with what you can get. Below are the results of my two night photo shoots.

PS) If you are wondering, my teacher liked the last three the best.

I like the first one best too. I have had pretty terrible results with night photography. Except one time when a friend showed us how to make it look like a ghost was standing in the picture. Fun! You've inspired me to try more (real shots).
