First we headed over to the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge for walk through the woods and out onto the newer boardwalk that goes over a mile out onto the Nisqually delta and mudflats. I was hoping to make it the whole way, but the kids started getting pretty fussy so we had to turn back (Jake no longer wanted to ride in the stroller, and Abby, who had no stroller spot, complained she was getting too tired!). In all, I think we walked about 3 miles so I guess the kids did pretty well considering. :) The views were stunning and almost ethereal.
The kids didn't care much for the views though and were instead captivated by all the caterpillars crawling along the pathway. We had to stop for nearly every single one! :) We also spotted a frog that we had fun watching for a bit.
And as if the Nisqually adventure wasn't enough, we hopped across the freeway to the Schilter Family Farm for the kids' first trip to a pumpkin patch. We'll definitely be back to this farm again next year. The kids had such a great time going through a hay maze, a petting farm, playing on the playground, climbing a hay pyramid, and going on a tractor ride (the highlight for Ben for sure!). We didn't actually buy a pumpkin (we'd already bought one on sale at Fred Meyer not thinking we'd be going to a pumpkin patch), but Abby had fun trying to pick up the biggest pumpkin that she could (hence, the strained look on her face :).

It was a very fun afternoon and I'm not sure if we'll be able to top that next time Leah is able to visit!
