Yesterday, the forecast was 90 degrees for Olympia and 80 degrees for the coast, so we (my mom and I) decided that it was a good time for Abby's first trip to the beach and a visit with Kevin's parents. My mom said, "You don't think it will be too hot, do you?" I said, "Nah, it's only May, plus it's always a bit cooler when you're on the beach, especially with the wind." Kevin even said, "You'd better pack a sweatshirt because you never know, it could end up being 55 degrees." Kevin knows from years of experience that often when it's really hot in Olympia it's actually cold and foggy on the coast, and that the weather forecast is also not very accurate.

Abby trying on her new sun hat and ready for her trip to the ocean!
After getting a late start (surprise, surprise), we headed west and hoped Abby would fall asleep in the car for her early afternoon nap...she did, but not until one minute (no exaggeration) before we reached Westport. =) We dropped Kevin off at the Westport marina to work on his boat for the afternoon and we headed down to the Grayland beach. Since Abby was asleep, my mom sat in the car with her while I spread the blankets out on the scorching sand. It was hot. The weather forecast was wrong....it wasn't 80 degrees, it was over 90 degrees on the beach! I didn't even get a chance to sit down before mom hollered over from the car that Abby was awake. I went to the car and nursed Abby. As I fed her and felt myself get more and more damp from sweat, I realized that it was just too hot for Abby to play at the beach. So, we packed it up and headed to Kevin's parents house just one mile away. They hadn't seen Abby since Easter, so they had lots of fun playing with her and seeing how much she'd grown.

After awhile, we decided to head outside to enjoy the nice breeze. Grandma Marks put some water in a container for Abby to play with. Abby was very intrigued and it helped to keep her a bit cool too!
Grandpa and Grandma just couldn't get enough of their precious granddaughter!

We said goodbye, Kevin joined us again, and we headed back to the beach for some quick pictures. It was nearly 8:00 but still plenty warm - so unusual for the Washington Coast, especially in May!! I was dying to stay longer and let Abby really enjoy her first trip to the beach, but it was already much too late and we needed to get home and get to bed.

Walking in the sand for the first time.

Abby multi-tasking on the way home: playing with her feet and drinking from her sippy cup at the same time!
So, Abby's first experience at the beach was nothing what I'd hoped it to be, but there will surely be many more opportunities if I have anything to do with it and we were very glad to get in a wonderful visit with Grandpa and Grandma Marks.

Great pictures, Sara. Abby's so photogenic! I love beach pictures. If I had to choose one it would be....all of them. Mom
Awww, I love the pictures at the beach. You can tell she was interested in the sand on her tootsies. :o) Does she drink well out of her sippy cup? Luke still won't really drink out of one, but will drink more out of a regular cup if I hold it for him. (There's no way I'm giving him his own cup with liquid in it, unless I want it alllll over the place!) We've tried 4 different sippy cups so far...I guess I'll just keep trying.
How fun you live close enough to the ocean to visit for the afternoon! Rachel has been begging to go to the ocean...but there's not many in Kansas!
We've been so warm here as well. The weather switched on a dime!
Cute pictures. Abby is really sweet.
Adrienne - she doesn't do really well with the sippy cup yet (the picture is a bit deceptive in that regards). She'll drink pretty well from it (or a regular cup) if we're holding it, but she's still trying to figure out the sippy cup on her own - mostly she ends up just chewing on the end.
Michelle - How sad! I didn't think about how your little ones would miss the beach so much. It is a wonderful blessing to live so close....Kevin and his family apparently don't feel the same way - his parents live one mile from the beach and he told me that when they were younger they would go up to a year or two between visits. Lame, huh?
