Lizzy the Toddler

This part was written when Lizzy was about 13 or 14 months old:

Sometime over the past month or so, Lizzy went from a baby to a toddler. She'd been taking a few steps here and there on her own for about a month or so, but the first full week of October she finally took off and never looked back! She even has a "run" speed when she's excited. :) She loves being one of the "big kids." She actually gave up playing with her baby toys long ago and prefers her siblings' toys. :) Last week, I was having a hard time keeping her happy while trying to teach Abby and Ben - a few minutes later I heard squeals of laughter coming from down the hallway. When I went to check, Jake was pushing a ball back and forth with Lizzy and said, "I'm trying to keep her happy for you, Mama." So sweet and she LOVES to play with Jake. I'm amazed at how different her relationship is with each sibling. Jake is definitely her playmate and buddy.

Sometimes her growth surprises even me when she does something I didn't expect. For instance, the other day I was sitting on the couch and feeling lazy and didn't want to get up to get my phone. I jokingly said to Lizzy, "Can you go get mama's phone and bring it to her?" It was on the floor, next to several other toys and objects. She walked over, picked out my phone from among the other objects and brought it to me! Wow! And a couple weeks ago, I was giving her a bath and asked her if she was all done. She signed "all done" back to me and then proceeded to pick up the bath toys and put them in their caddy all by herself without any direction from me. I was amazed! Maybe she will be an amazing cleaner for me! Hehe! One of her first "chores" that she enjoys helping me with is putting the clothes into the dryer when I had them to her from the washing machine. She's so proud of herself and will sometimes stop to clap when I tell her good job. :)

(Written now; Lizzy is 17-months-old)

Lizzy continues to amaze and amaze us all. This is my favorite stage of all. :) Like her older brother Jake before her, she is very verbal for her age. I can't even being to keep track of all the words she knows. I'd guess she can say well over 50, including every family member's name, many body parts, and random words like door, tree, ball, yes, no, Amen, Jesus, cheese (for the food and when she sees the camera!),   If she's hungry, she often heads over to her high chair and says, "Eat eat eat!" or she goes to the fridge, fusses for someone to open it, and then proceeds to pick something out, usually cheese, yogurt or berries (she says "berries" too - it sounds especially cute!).

She is still nursing often. It's my first time nursing a toddler this old and it's.....interesting. Right now, she insists on having something in her hand (sometimes both hands) while she nurses. Since I usually nurse her on the couch, it is most often a book from the coffee table - sometimes a very large book. It makes for some awkward positioning, but she literally will not start to nurse until she has grabbed something. So silly!

(Written when Lizzy just turned 19-months-old)
One of Lizzy's favorite things to say is "hi." She says it when people walk in and out of a room, she says it when your holding her and she kind of cranes her neck so she can look you right in the face as she says it, she says it when no one is saying anything to fill in the silence or get some social interaction from someone. My nephew Donald pointed out how she just casually says "hi" to him here and there, but how it's a most appropriate thing to randomly say! It's really quite sweet and adorable. None of the other kids did this quite so much. The only thing I can think of that influenced her is that I do remember saying "hi" to her a lot when she was a little baby, like when I changed her diaper and such. I'm not sure why I did - she was just so quite to smile at and there's not always a lot to say to a pre-talking baby, so I defaulted to "hi!" :)

(two days before turning 2)
Many of you don't know this since Lizzy (two-years-old in two days!) is usually pretty quiet in public settings, but she has become QUITE the talker.
I was holding Lizzy and tucking Ben into bed. After leaning over and giving him a hug and a kiss, Lizzy said, "This my mama." and then to Ben who was near the foot of the bed, "Benny, there's your pillow way over there." As we exited the bedroom, our cat Calvin (nickname Bubba) was in the hallway meowing for his bedtime wet cat food which he knows he gets as soon as the kids to go bed. Lizzy said, "Bubba, I love you SO much!" and then to me, "Bubba is so loud." After we got the cat his food (which she always insists on handing him the bowl herself to put on the floor in front of the cat), she asked,  "Mama, drink a milk please."
